“We are passing through a period of significant global instability but the biggest threat to our citizens comes from within our borders,” stated PN Head of delegation David Casa during a debate on the European Parliament’s position on the Commission’s 2024 Rule of Law Report.

Casa called out systemic governance failures and corruption within member states. Highlighting Spain, Hungary, and Malta as critical examples, the MEP demanded immediate EU intervention to uphold the rule of law.

Casa cited "shocking scandals of corruption and theft from European citizens". In his speech, he condemned the recent corruption scandals in Spain, Hungary’s persecution of minorities and Malta’s recent efforts to derail justice by making a citizen’s ability to trigger a magisterial inquiry unworkable.

“They have destroyed the only remaining tool that had any success in combatting the high level corruption and money laundering that has plagued this government. It is good that the golden passport scheme has been declared illegal. This is a positive step but a small one when considering the continued hijack of the institutions in Malta."

Casa called for more robust and focused effort from EU institutions to uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of honest citizens and not corrupt politicians.
